Brittney Griner’s wife speaks out on denied appeal: ‘This is just absurd’

“Honestly, it was disheartening. It was a complete disbelief to me. I understand being in the legal field that every state, every country has their own laws, but this is just absurd,” she said.

Cherelle Griner added that there is “nothing more to look forward to from a legal standpoint” at this point.

“That was the complete end of it,” she said. “From a legal point of view there is nothing to hope for, now all the eggs are in a basket to see how important this issue is to our government and America, because this can happen to anyone, we have to pray that we have a country. It recognizes its importance and is willing to actually get our Americans and bring them back home.

Brittney Griner’s legal team did not say whether it would appeal the ruling further, citing her “biggest fear” that it might. There will be no exchange of prisoners.

“At this point, I have no other way of looking at it than it’s political,” Cherelle Griner said Tuesday. “Seeing that they didn’t take into account the whole circumstances of who she is as a person when they made the decision, I feel like it has to be political at this point.”

The last time she spoke to her wife a week before the plea hearing, the WNBA star revealed her “mind is fading here.”

“It was very disappointing to hear that,” Cherelle Griner said.
